What is a Mechanical Design Engineer?

How to become a Mechanical Design Engineer

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or other degrees in similar fields of work. With some employers, a master’s degree is preferred.
  • 1 or 2 A levels, or equivalent, for a foundation agree or higher national diploma.
  • 2 or 3 A levels, or equivalent, for a degree.

Skills

  • Knowledge of engineering science and technology.
  • Maths skills
  • Pay close attention to designs for precision, accuracy and all standards and regulations.
  • Technical expertise with a strong understanding of manufacturing processes
  • Analyse and interpret data related to product performance and quality control.
  • Adapt to requirements, timelines and budgets which will change from project to project.

Day-to-day tasks

  • Conduct research to stay up to date with latest trends within the industry.
  • Explaining design and manufacturing processes through technical drawings and documentation.
  • Collaborating with suppliers and manufacturers.
  • Use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create mechanical components and systems, both 2D and 3D.
  • Write and present reports to project managers and clients.

How much could you earn as a Mechanical Design Engineer?

It can vary depending on factors such as location, industry, company size, and level of experience.

  • For a Mechanical Design Engineer, the starting salary is typically between £20,000 and £45,000 per annum.
  • Engineers with more experience can earn between £28,000 and £45,000 per annum.
  • Senior levels of Mechanical Design Engineers can earn £50,000 or more per annum. This is due to the increase in experience and responsibility.
