What is a Mobile HGV technician?

  • Specialises in repair, maintenance, and servicing of large commercial vehicles.
  • Typically operate on-site or in the field instead of a garage or workshop.
  • Responsible for diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults.
  • Conducting routine inspections and performing repairs on vehicles.

How to become a Mobile HGV Technician?

Qualifications

  • Vocational education is highly recommended in heavy vehicle mechanics or related fields.
  • Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Heavy Vehicle Diagnostic and Repair.
  • Apprenticeship programs approved by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) or other relevant alternatives.
  • Driving license valid in Category C or Category C+E. Category C allows rigid HGV’s to be driven while Category C+E permits articulated HGV’s to be driven.
  • Automotive technician Accreditation (ATA) in Heavy Vehicle Repair or Heavy Vehicle Inspection would be relevant to a mobile HGV technician role.
  • Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is a legal requirement for professional HGV operators in the UK.

Skills

  • Understanding of heavy goods vehicles mechanics, electrical systems, and diagnostics.
  • Strong diagnostic skills to identify and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical faults correctly, as well as diagnostic tools and equipment to perform accurate diagnoses.
  • Possessing skills in repairing and maintaining HGV is key.
  • Problem-solving abilities to analyse problems, identify root causes and determine efficient solutions.

Day-to-Day Tasks

  • Responding to breakdowns and emergencies to provide on-site repairs.
  • Identifying faulty or worn-out components and replacing with the new parts.
  • Interacting with clients in a professional manner, understanding concerns and explaining any action taken.
  • Adhering to health and safety regulations alongside industry standards and best practice.
  • Conducting thorough inspections of HGV’s, assessing overall condition to identify mechanical or electrical faults.

How much could you earn as a Mobile HGV Technician?

  • At entry level with limited experience, you can earn between £18,000 and £24,000 per annum.
  • With several years of experience and a proven track record, your salary can range from £24,000 to £40,000 per annum.
  • Earning potential can increase when working in a senior or supervisory role, having salaries between £32,000 and £40,000 per annum, depending on a variety of factors (employer, responsibility, industry).
