Hi everyone, my name is Frankie and I've been on work experience at Venatu as part of my school placement. I've really enjoyed my time with the marketing team, learning how they work and create content. I really enjoy writing so jumped at the chance to do my first blog which is below.
What is a van driver?
A van driver is someone who operates a van as a mode of transportation to deliver packages, people, or both. Van drivers have the option to work for many different industries, such as delivery services, transportation organisations, delivery or courier services, or can even work independently. The primary responsibility of a van driver is to get from one place to another safely and efficiently, ensuring that what they may be delivering arrives on time.
How to become a van driver
- There are no specific qualifications for becoming a van driver, however, there are some requirements for the job, such as:
- A valid UK driver's license is a necessity due to insurance purposes.
- Many employers prefer to hire those with a clean driving record. A clean driving record will show the employer that you are not careless on the road and will take care of the things you are transporting.
- While most van driving positions will not need you to have prior experience, a background in operating vans may be beneficial, as it shows the employer you are familiar with using larger vehicles.
Key skills for a Van Driver
- Good communication skills will be important if you are interacting with passengers, customers, or colleagues. This includes being able to give clear instructions, listen carefully, and present yourself professionally.
- Being in good shape may be required for jobs that include lifting heavy deliveries but will not be a requirement for all positions.
- Navigation and route planning will be important so you can make your way around safely yet efficiently, whilst also being aware of things that may get in your way such as traffic diversions, traffic itself, closed roads and other things that may get in your way whilst on the road.
- Problem solving and quick thinking will be needed to handle situations like this, as you may need to come up with a solution quickly to get to your destination on time.
- The ability to keep yourself calm will be important to not only your employers but also your customers and passengers.
- It is important that you have good customer service skills, as you should be polite when you interact with customers and passengers, and able to communicate clearly with them.
- Time management is crucial in this career, as you need to make sure you can get to your destination on time safely yet efficiently
- You will need to keep yourself organised so you can keep track of deliveries, schedules, paperwork, deadlines and maintenance records. Keeping yourself organised and on schedule will ensure a smoother workflow.
Day to day tasks
- Keeping up with vehicle maintenance is an important part of keeping yourself and your workday organised. Making sure the van is clean and tidy will be a key task that will need to be done daily.
- Filling out necessary paperwork for packages and safety protocol will be a regular task on the job
- Answering to customers will be part of delivering them or a parcel to them. Ensuring all your customers are satisfied is crucial to your job performance
- Deliveries will take place across the area or even the country, depending on the position you take. Being able to drive for long periods of time will be important to this job.
Earning potential as a Van Driver
On average, a Van Driver can expect to earn around £20,500 per annum to about £30,000. This is dependant on contract type, location and experience.
